RFID used to trace and track patients in South African hospital January 23, 2006
Cape Town based Holbert Systems was tapped by Medi-Clinic Hospital Group, a leader in the private hospital industry in South Africa and Namibia to pilot a solution to accurately monitor the time spent by patient in the hospital’s operating theatres. Medi-Clinic was looking for a solution that required limited human intervention, a direct interface with the hospital’s own computer network, and ability to produce bills automatically.
Holbert Systems used radio frequency identification (RFID) tags attached to the patient’s bed. Wavetrend RFID readers were installed in the operating theaters and a data buffer per theatre complex. So far, the solution has brought about favorable results. The system has dramatically improved payment terms with insurance companies.
