3 Billion RFID Tags Shipped in China by 2009, In-Stat Says April 2, 2006
A recent research conducted by In-stat, a leading research and consulting services provider, shows that RFID tags shipped in China will continue to increase. In-Stat projects that by 2009, about 3 billion RFID tags will be shipped in China.
In 2005, there were more than 100 million RFID tags shipped in the country. Most of these RFID tags were used for human ID as part of China’s second-generation Resident ID Card program.
Considering China’s current population that exceeds 1.3 billion, the said Resident Card ID project is among the largest RFID projects in the world. The Ministry of Public Security, which spearheads the program, expects that one billion ID cards shall already be issued before the year 2008 ends.
Furthermore, the research shows that starting 2008, use of RFID tags shall expand from resident ID cards to the retail goods. The use of RFID tags in several industries is still currently hampered by “incompatible RFID standards,” In-Stat says.
