Smart-tek Provides Chinese Gov’t RFID Technology to Track Bird Flu March 25, 2006

RFID technology shows increasing application in several industries; now, Chinese Government is using it to track bird flu or avian influenza. The RFID tracking system is provided by Smart-tek Communications, a company in British Columbia.

In a recent demonstration in a conference in Beijing, Smart-tek showed to the Chinese government, how RFID tags shall track the spread of the virus that causes the disease.

The system called the RFID Tracking Alert Containment and Poultry Monitoring (RTAC-PM) shall be deployed in the birds in China. The RFID tags shall be monitored with user-defined alerts.

If Smart-tek’s RFID technology shall be successful in the long run, it shall prevent a pandemic among 13 billion chickens in China and among the people in affected areas as well. To date, there have been 10 people who already died of bird flu. Apart from that, businesses in several provinces in China have been adversely affected.
